Reciting to the Drummers' beat

I was invited to read at a cook out - not just any cookout - but this was a celebration of a drummers circle who were rehearsing for their sojourn to Africa where they were invited to perform. Not only were they rehearsing but they were celebrating in the form of a cookout.

These women played and invited those of us who were members (about four) to pick up an instrument - any instrument be it drum - rattle or whistle, and join in. All present had to contribute.

It was fun - it was freeing - it was energy.

And I read 5 poems - all well recieved - all supported. I even tried my hand at dancing African tribal style where my four year old teacher instructed me to take off my shoes. I had to - she said. so who was I to disobey this little lady with so much charisma - so much energy - so much sense of self. To my self I thought - she is who I'm striving to be - free and truely me. and this thought stayed with me as I moved - grass between my toes - I danced.

(now this really did take place on June 10th)
